AC Milan manager Stefano Pioli has shed light on why Nigerian forward Samuel Chukwueze hasn’t been a regular starter compared to Christian Pulisic this season, as reported by PUNCH Sports Extra.

Pioli emphasized Pulisic’s indispensable role in the team despite calls for Chukwueze to be given more playing time. In their recent encounter against Juventus, Pulisic once again started the game, with Chukwueze making a late appearance, albeit neither player making a decisive impact in the goalless draw.

Explaining his decision-making, Pioli stated, “I liked Pulisic instead. Chukwueze is also fine, but at the moment I won’t give up an extra midfielder to play with four attacking players, and therefore Chukwuze is the one sacrificed the most at the moment.”

Pulisic has enjoyed a stellar debut season at San Siro, netting 13 goals across all competitions and starting in 40 out of 46 appearances. His consistent performances have earned him acclaim and secured his spot in the starting lineup.

On the other hand, Chukwueze, who joined Milan alongside Pulisic in the summer of 2023, has started in only 13 of his 48 outings this season. Despite this, he has contributed with one goal and two assists in Serie A and scored twice in the UEFA Champions League before Milan’s elimination in the group stages.

Chukwueze endured a challenging period upon returning from the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations duty with Nigeria but gradually found his form, notably scoring his first Serie A goal in Milan’s victory over Hellas Verona.

Reflecting on his milestone, Chukwueze expressed his joy and determination to continue contributing to the team. He emphasized his commitment to working hard and fulfilling the expectations set by the coach and the club.

As Milan approaches the end of the current season, Chukwueze aims to maintain his dedication and prepare for his second season with the club. Signed for €20 million plus bonuses, Chukwueze remains focused on making significant contributions to the team’s success in the future.
